backlight not properly refurbished ![]()
pros: refurbished harmony 550 remote in in like new cosmetic condition.
cons: lcd backlight not properly refurbished to usable condition. The one i received happens to be very dim. The backlight on the buttons are very dim too and are not evenly lit.
reason for 2 stars: problem: the lcd screen is crucial to the operation of the remote, (e.g. selecting which devices to control and the extended "soft" buttons that it provides), when the lcd backlight is very dim, it makes the remote useless.
common and consistent problems with refurbs: In my experience with cell phones and palm pilots, refurbished products are hit and miss when it comes to the quality of the backlight. sometimes you get a strong good-as-new backlight, most of the time you don't. Case in point, my friend and i got the same refurb cell phone, his backlight is brighter than mine. When i sent in new my palm pilot for repair, they gave me a refurb one with clearly inferior (dim and uneven) backlighting (which made that device almost useless). Brand new harmony 510 remote had a strong backlight, this 550 that i'm returning has a very weak and dim backlight.
Would've rather bought this remote new, but logitech don't make it anymore and so those who are selling it in new condition now are pricing it a lot more than this product is worth (it's a remote and should be priced as such, its not a fully functioning bluetooth, wifi, 5mp camera, pda smartphone device, netbook, etc, etc)
Fine remote, but not perfect ![]()
The remote is an attractive introductory universal, with very simple general setup and a nice interface. Switching between devices (like changing the volume of an amp while listening to a source such as a Media PC) can be tedious however, so setting up "activities" is a beneficial investment of time/effort. The remote also has great range and flexibility. Downsides involve the effort spent setting it up properly.
Logitech Harmony 550 Remote ![]()
I have had a few universal type remotes in the past, and hated ever one of them because there was always some function that you had to pull out the original remote for. I have been using the Logitech Harmony 550 for a few weeks now, and haven't pulled out any of the original remotes even once. I love the activity driven funcions, which make watching or listening to anything a breeze. There are function specific buttons on the original remotes that are not here, because you simply no longer need them. Choosing an activity automatically sets all the source inputs, outputs, and channel input set-ups on ALL your equipment. When you go from one activity to another, it even turns off the equipment you are no longer using for the new activity. When sitting in a darkened room, there is a button to illuminate the backlighting. Other remotes I've had, including the originals, would always require turning on the room lighting.
Something else I didn't even consider is that whenever anyone ever came to my house for a visit, they would always aske me to turn on the equipment because of the complexity of what all the settings had to be. This is no longer the case, I just show them the activity menu and ther're on their way.
All in all I am extremely happy with this purchase, and I would not only recomend it, I urge anyone with a complex A/V set-up to get one of these.

The 1st truly universal remote I've owned since the term was coined.... ![]()
This product is easy to set up with your computer, easy to use, and does everything it says it will. One touch macros to set up whatever activity you want to do (watch TV, watch a DVD, listen to music, etc.) And if something goes wrong for some reason (it's usually not the remote's fault, by the way) press help and the remote will walk you step by step through different solutions until the problem is fixed, just by pushing buttons. Definitely worth the money!
